Prescribed Fire Apprentice Andrea Steig grew up a city kid in Seattle and, thanks to acquaintances in North, Central, and South America, started learning how interconnected society and ecology are. She earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Yale University and a master’s in anthropology from University of Arizona, researching genomic adaptation of trees in industrial forestry. She has taught students from 4th grade through college, in math, natural sciences, and social sciences. As a newcomer to San Francisco, in January 2025 she heard of Good Fire Alliance from fellow forestry enthusiasts. She fell in love with fire, going on to work for a season as a wildland firefighter in Oregon. While working with All Hands Ecology, she is also a PhD candidate at the University of Arizona, writing a dissertation on good fire and wildfire in the North American West. She is thrilled to learn from fire practitioners, land stewards, and people who have been living with fire.
